Can Gemini Organize Google Drive? What It Can and Can't Do
partly. Gemini in Google Drive summarizes files, answers questions and, with "Suggest file moves", proposes moving loose files into existing or new folders, only on drive.google.com, in English and on eligible plans, according to Google. The Gemini app can't create folders, move files, or open pictures and videos in Drive, per Google's help. To sort photos and videos by what they show, you use Gemini through the API, which is how Sorted works.
Can Gemini organize Google Drive? Partly. Gemini in Google Drive summarizes files and folders, answers questions about them, and with a feature called "Suggest file moves" proposes moving loose files into existing or new folders. According to Google, that only works on drive.google.com, only in English and only on eligible Workspace or Google AI plans. What Gemini doesn't do is sort photos and videos into categories by what's in the picture. The Gemini app, per Google's own help, can't create folders, move anything, or even open pictures and videos stored in Drive. If you want Gemini to do that job, you go through the Gemini API.
Everything below comes from Google's help center and its Workspace Updates blog, as of November 2026. Where Google doesn't say, this guide says so.

Which Gemini are we talking about?
"Gemini" covers three different things, and the answer changes with each.
- Gemini in Google Drive: the features built into Drive itself, through "Ask Gemini" at the top right, in the file viewer and in search. Per Google's help, you need an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan.
- The Gemini app: the chat at gemini.google.com, which can connect to Google Workspace and read content from Drive.
- The Gemini API: the model for developers, called with a key from Google AI Studio. Here you decide what happens with the results.
What Gemini in Google Drive can do today
Google's Gemini in Drive help page lists, among other things: summarize files and folders, research topics across several files, search and retrieve files with AI Overviews, and organize files.
Plain-language search. Per Google, you can type everyday phrases into the Drive search bar instead of exact file names. Ask about the contents of your files and an AI Overview with source citations may appear above the results.
Images. Since August 2025, Gemini in the side panel can answer questions about images and summarize them. Google's examples: summarize an image, extract its text, turn a receipt into a table. Google says it works best on scanned documents and text-heavy images, and it's English only.
Videos. Since May 2025, Gemini can summarize videos in Drive and answer questions about them, for example to list action items from a meeting recording. Google's requirement: your admin has turned on automatically generated captions. Also English only.
Organizing. "Suggest file moves" is the closest thing to sorting. The next section walks through it.
How Gemini organizes Google Drive with "Suggest file moves"
Google launched the feature as a beta in October 2025 and made it generally available in June 2026. The flow, per Google's help center:
- Open drive.google.com on a computer and go to My Drive or a folder.
- If there are loose files that can be organized, a "Suggest file moves" button appears.
- Gemini proposes moving files into existing folders or creating new folders for files that belong together. It bases this on file content, your past organizing patterns and general filing best practices.
- You can refine with your own prompt, ask for more or fewer new folders, or shorten folder names.
- Select the files, click "Move files" and confirm.
Gemini won't move anything without your permission. You can undo a move, though new folders stay in place. If you remove a suggestion, Gemini won't suggest that file and folder pair again for 30 days. It considers PDFs, Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, Microsoft Office files, images, videos with transcripts, and shortcuts, and you need Editor access.
Google lists these plans: Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Google AI Pro and Ultra, Google AI Pro for Education, and the AI Expanded Access add-on. It's browser only and English only, and Google notes you'll be asked to confirm any resulting permission changes after a move.
What Gemini can't do when organizing Google Drive
The Gemini app doesn't organize Drive. Google's help for personal accounts and for work and school accounts says the Gemini app can't access pictures and videos in your Drive and can't manage content, such as creating folders or moving content between folders. It works with documents, spreadsheets, presentations and PDFs.
The side panel commands are gone. In July 2025, Google launched a feature that let Gemini in Drive's side panel create folders and move up to five files at a time on request. A note on the original announcement says it has been unavailable since April 20, 2026. Older tutorials still describe it.
Gemini moves files instead of linking them. In Google Drive a file has one location. If a clip belongs in both "Product" and "Office", the Drive way to do that is a shortcut. "Suggest file moves" moves files, so each one ends up in exactly one folder.
Silent videos drop out. Google says the organizer considers videos with transcripts. B-roll usually has no speech, so it has none.
What Google doesn't say
These points aren't covered in Google's documentation, so nobody can answer them with certainty yet:
- Image content when organizing. Google lists images as eligible files but doesn't explain whether or how Gemini recognizes what's in a photo when it proposes a folder.
- Searching by image content. Google's Drive search help doesn't describe searching photos by what they show, and the plain-language search page doesn't say whether it finds photos by subject.
- What Gemini sees in a video. Video questions require captions. Whether Gemini also analyzes the picture or only the spoken words isn't stated.
- Other languages for organizing. "Suggest file moves" is English only for now. Google hasn't said when other languages will follow.
Using the Gemini API to organize Google Drive by content
The models themselves are very capable with images. Google's image understanding docs name image captioning, classification and visual question answering, without training a model of your own. Through the API, you decide what happens in Drive afterwards.
A pipeline that works for photos and videos:
- List the files. A program reads all photos and videos in the chosen folders through the Drive API.
- Send each image to Gemini. For photos, the image itself. For videos, for example the thumbnail Google Drive generates.
- Get back a description and a category. Give Gemini your categories, say talking head, product, office, team, outdoor, and have it return one category plus a short description and keywords.
- Create shortcuts instead of moving. Per the Drive API docs, shortcuts are files that link to other files. The program places them in category folders, and the original stays where it is.
- Only process what's new next time. The program remembers what it has already sorted.
You can build this with Google Apps Script or your own code. Budget time for error handling, large folders that time out, and API costs. For a comparison of ready-made options, see the AI tools to organize Google Drive, and for footage specifically, the guide on how to organize B-roll.
How Sorted uses Gemini to organize Google Drive
Sorted is that pipeline as a finished web app. You connect your Google account and pick folders, and subfolders come along. Gemini looks at every photo and video (for videos, through the thumbnail Google Drive creates), so it works on silent footage too. Each file gets a short description, keywords and a suggested category with a confidence percentage. Gemini proposes categories, and you can add your own.
When you sort, Sorted creates a folder named "Sortiert" in your Drive with one subfolder per category, holding shortcuts to your originals. Nothing is moved, copied or changed, and one file can sit in several categories. You can search your material by its descriptions and keywords. You don't need a Workspace plan, just your own Gemini API key from Google AI Studio: Google bills you directly, about €0.70 per 1,000 files, and Sorted shows the estimated cost before every run. Categories, suggestions and your encrypted key are stored in the hidden app folder in your own Drive.
Sorted costs €10 a month or €96 a year, and Sorted Pro €20 a month or €192 a year, VAT included. A free demo sorts 25 photos or videos. Limits: Google Drive only, very fresh videos don't have a thumbnail yet, and each view shows up to 5,000 files. The app is available in English and German. For contracts and invoices, Gemini in Drive is the better fit. Try Sorted
Conclusion
Can Gemini organize Google Drive? For loose documents, yes: "Suggest file moves" proposes folders and moves files once you approve, so far in English and on eligible plans. Sorting photos and videos into several categories by what they show isn't something Google describes, and the Gemini app can neither create folders nor open images in Drive. For that, use Gemini through the API, built yourself or with Sorted. For the full overview of Drive's own options, read how to sort Google Drive and how to organize Google Drive with AI.
Frequently asked questions
Can Gemini organize my Google Drive?
Partly. In Google Drive, Gemini's "Suggest file moves" proposes moving loose files into existing or new folders and only moves them after you confirm. Google says it works only on drive.google.com, only in English and only on eligible Workspace or Google AI plans. Google doesn't describe sorting photos and videos into categories by image content.
Can Gemini create folders and move files in Google Drive?
Only through "Suggest file moves", where Gemini proposes new folders and moves and you approve them. The side panel commands that let Gemini create folders and move up to five files on request were discontinued on April 20, 2026. The Gemini app at gemini.google.com can't create folders or move content, according to Google.
Can Gemini see what's in my photos in Google Drive?
In Drive's side panel, Gemini can answer questions about a single image and summarize it, in English, and Google says it works best on scanned documents and text-heavy images. The Gemini app can't access pictures and videos in your Drive. Google doesn't explain how much image content feeds into "Suggest file moves".
Can Gemini organize videos in Google Drive?
Only to a point. When organizing, Google says Gemini considers videos that have transcripts, so silent footage such as B-roll is left out. Summaries and questions about a video work in the file viewer, in English, and only if automatic captions are enabled for the domain.
Which plan do I need for Gemini in Google Drive?
Google says you need an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan. For "Suggest file moves", Google lists Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Google AI Pro and Ultra, Google AI Pro for Education and the AI Expanded Access add-on. By that description, a free Google account isn't enough.
How can I use Gemini to sort Google Drive photos by content?
Through the Gemini API. A program fetches each photo or video thumbnail from Drive, has Gemini describe what's in it, and creates shortcuts in category folders. You can script that yourself or use a tool like Sorted, which does exactly that with your own Gemini API key.
